Preview: Craig Charles returns to Canvas
“No sleep til bedtime!” Not our words but the words of our favourite funkster, Craig Charles, who is set to make his third appearance at Canvas on January 20, 2017.
What a way to shake off those pesky January blues!
Actor and BBC6 DJ, Craig is one of the UK’s biggest champions of new music yet his sets also include dancefloor classics to help you work off that Christmas turkey. Think funk, think soul, think disco – it’s an eclectic mix that only a DJ as talented as Craig could make work.
His Saturday night radio show gained him an army of fans from the start but who’d have thought it would translate so well into shows? The radio show has been running since 2002 so is coming up to its 15-year anniversary.
“Since its inception I have been interested in all varieties of soul and funk music, without imposing any barriers and I am just as enthusiastic about fresh new talent as I am about the classic artists from the golden age of the 60s and 70s,” he told Looemusic.co.uk recently.
His set is quite literally a journey through time, mixing the best vintage cuts with brand new talent.
Last year, Craig told The Guardian about where his love of music began: “At home, the radio or record player was always on, and there was always dancing: [my] dad’s friends would arrive to play calypso and soca, drink rum and argue while the kitchen was full of ‘big black mamas, really heavy ladies, cooking curried chicken and roti’”
With two new series of Red Dwarf also released in 2016, how does he find the time to do these gigs? Through sheer passion, of course.
Craig has an eerie knack of knowing exactly what beat to drop at what time to keep the crowd moving. He is one of Liverpool’s best-known exports and we are delighted to welcome him down south for some northern soul.
This gig WILL sell out so buy tickets now on the website or contact Dawn on firstname.lastname@example.org or 01202 556113.
