Hair news: stylist stars of tomorrow at Errol Douglas
He has been nominated 13 times for British Hairdresser of the Year, winner of the Afro category three times, winner of the Black Beauty/Wahl Awards’ Stylist of the Year, overall AIPP Grand Trophy winner, the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Hairdresser of the Year, the Fellowship Gold Salon Consumer Award (2 consecutive years), Creative Head Media Darling of the Year, British Master Award at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards ceremony, and Most Wanted Hair Trend 2009. In addition, 2008 saw Errol awarded an MBE for services to hairdressing.
He opened his own salon on Motcomb Street in London in 1998 and has seen a host of celebrities whisked in and out of the discreet back entrance – from Kelly Rowland to Sienna Miller to Lily Cole.
What makes his London salon stand out? Three things in particular: the excellent atmosphere, low staff turnover and the successful training programme. It’s latest graduate Jade Blackley hit the headlines last month when it turned out she was responsible for Emilia Fox’s eye-catching new redhead do.I caught up with Jade, ironically, to have the remains of red taken out of my hair. I’m going back to blonde for summer, just as Ms Fox will lighten up when filming resumes on Silent Witness. Jade complemented my dark blonde roots with a series of golden and caramel blonde highlights.
“I’m backing natural and sun-kissed colour trends for 2012,” Jade said. “Blondes will look like they are fresh from the beach. It’s also an ideal shade that allows natural gradual lightening, especially when you go on holiday.”
Jade says she’d love to do a colour makeover on Amber Le Bon. “She’s a stunning young girl that has worked the grunge look for some time,” she said. “I think that by getting replacing the blonde extensions would change her look completely. By placing some golden highlights round the front of her face will frame and show of her gorgeous stunning features.”
Errol couldn’t be prouder of Jade and his Knightsbridge salon team and says bringing stylists up through the ranks keeps the styling fresh. “We put great emphasis on training juniors and inspiring seniors,” Errol said. “Jade is the perfect example of the new generation of the brand. She’s an exciting colourist and the perfect example of how hard work and technical flair reaps rewards.”
As well as mentoring the stylist stars of tomorrow, Errol has lots of plans for the aesthetics of the salon. A complete interior refurb is underway with updates that really reflect the forward-thinking ethos of the brand. A ‘treat suite’ salon menu will feature Rococo Chocolates featuring hot chocolate, a bespoke Errol Douglas chocolate and a bacon sandwich using indulgent chocolate spread.
Express 90-minute treatments will be available for girls in the go, including a colour glossing treatment, intensive conditioningand six foil and cut/blow dry options, with an manicure included. In addition, clients can browse styles, Facebook their friends or even, go forbid, work on the salon iPads during their appointment.
