Eco hotel perfect for visit to Dorset

An eco hotel in Dorset has won ‘Small Hotel of the Year’ just eight months after it opened its doors.
The Green House hotel in Bournemouth was awarded Small Hotel/Guest Accommodation of the Year by a panel of experts at Bournemouth’s Tourism Awards. Opening in April 2010 following a £5million refurbishment, The Green House is 32-room Grade 1 listed Victorian property. With the aim of being the ‘greenest’ hotel in the UK, the development was a labour of love for City Eco Hotel Ltd, comprising of Christopher Airey, Harish Sodha and Sarah Burrows.

An interior designer by trade, Sarah says the transformation has been a real labour of love, going the extra mile to source green suppliers.

“We felt there was a niche in the hospitality sector for hotels with real style as well as green credentials,” said Sarah. “It meant that the look and feel had to be luxe, yet the raw materials had to be green.”

Sarah sourced 100% wool fabrics from the isle of Bute, British designed and made wallpaper, Forest Stewardship Council certified, printed with vegetable ink, sumptuous organic goose down duvets, recycled or handcraft hard wood furniture.

Wooden floors are FSC certified, the building’s intelligent low-energy lighting system means lights only come on when required. Rainwater is harvested from the roof for irrigation while there is little paper to be found – even the Do Not Disturb sign is made from recycled wood.

This is luxury and style you rarely see outside of the M25 and certainly a shock to the system of the traditionally staid Bournemouth guesthouse area.

The food is also causing a stir, with Scottish chef Gordon Jones presiding over the hotel’s Green Room restaurant. Ambitious and imaginative, the Green Room offers a traditional a la cartemenu or a six- or nine-course tasting menu featuring adventurous local fare. Think pheasant, guinea fowl and scallops, washed down with organic and biodynamic wines.

The Green House may be a newcomer on the eco block but with green credentials like this, coupled with awards and ecstatic customer reviews, this newcomer is here to stay.

A new Lazy Sunday package, from £85 per person, is available until February 28 2011. The package includes a night’s accommodation in a large double bedroom (other room grades available at a supplement), glass of champagne and pre-dinner cocktail per person, six-course tasting menu and full English breakfast served in your room if you wish.
