Make-up master: perfect packaging
Call me shallow, but it’s what’s on the outside that counts. What’s inside, too, but the packaging is becoming increasingly important.
As my beauty budget becomes more and more squeezed (thanks a lot, David Cameron), I make make-up purchases more carefully nowadays. That means the buy-not-to-buy checklist is getting longer.
Yes, I want a product that works, that offers value for money and lasting results, be it body lotion or foundation. But I also want pretty packaging.
Since my first jewellery box with a rotating ballerina, I’ve liked to display my favourite cosmetics in a manner akin to The Tate itself.
My current penchant for packaging can be described as ‘quirky’. I love vintage-style labels or anything bright or unusual.
One of my most favourite recent acquirements is the Wonder Woman range by MAC. The MAC Wonder Woman Mineralize Skinfinish will launch in March but already holds pride of place on my dresser and, when I leave the house, at the top of my handbag.
It combines all the best things of a compact. It’s multi-function, you can use as a bronzer, blend the colours with nude eyeshadow or chip off powder and mix with Vaseline for summery lips.
But it’s the packaging that stands out, in rich reds with the iconic Wonder Woman logo.
When grey Mondays get me down, a quick dusting off with the Mineralize Skinfinish bronzer really perks me up. I can’t wait to get my hands on the lipstick – I’m thinking the MAC Wonder Woman Lipstick in Spitfire will play an essential role in my desk-to-dancefloor transformation this year, I can tell.
The range starts at £10, from MAC counters and selfridges.com.
But you don’t have to pay a fortune for fancy packaging. For the next six days (so be quick!) the cutesy Berkeley Square range of body lotions, soaps and gifts is available from £5 on Secret Sales.
I’m also a huge fan of Soap & Glory, which is frequently on three-for-two offer in Boots stores and online at boots.com.
Hero products include Soap & Glory Calm One, Calm All Bubble Bath for just £5.11 and Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker XL Extreme Plump at £10.47.
These beauty bargains look fabulous next to my favourite make-up range, Benefit. The Gabbi Make-up Bag, £22.50, and record-shaped Some Kind-a Gorgeous concealer kit, £23.50, harks back to the more glamorous Fifties, and brings out my inner screen siren.
Shallow, moi? Well, when it comes to make-up, it never hurts to trust your first impression.
