Review: Jah Mirikle live at Lava & Ignite Bournemouth

There is a lot more to Lava & Ignite than cheap drinks and drunk students, it seems. This reggae dancehall night with live PA from Jah Mirikle was the ideal way to round off bank holiday weekend – something a bit different, well run, in the ideal venue. Mirikle was supported by DJs from Wassamuffin Sound and sounds included a mix of dancehall, bashment, reggae, hip hop and even a touch of funky house.

But it’s the little extras that make a night like this stand out. Something as simple as free whistles added to the carnival atmosphere. Anyone who felt a bit tired after too many bank holiday nights out couldn’t fail to feel revived by a bit of ‘Rum and Red Bull’ (the song AND the drink).

When it came to the live PA, Jah Mirikle proved he is a master of many styles and expert at making the crowd feel involved. According to his biog, he gained most of his musical training singing in an Anglican church choir, so no wonder he was so comfortable with a Sunday service. Excellent projection and real star quality.

If you like this sort of music, or just want to try something different, there are plenty more nights where this one came from. Tropical Jamz are promoting a Bob Marley tribute dancehall seduction nightclub at Taboo Nightclub next weekend, May 12. Or the next Mad Collab night at Lava & Ignite features Cali P on Sunday June 3. See Facebook for more info and the full DJ line-up.
