Review: Pizza Express summer menu

Read the menu in full and book a table – click here

It’s summertime and Salisbury square is alive with the sound of… gossip. The ladies who lunch are ordering passionfruit cocktails and people watching across the bustling Market Square.

But they are not in the Ritz or Waldorf. They are merely sampling the new Pizza Express summer menu and enjoying an afternoon of RnR.

Because for all their indoor dinner party efforts you simply can’t compare to the offerings at this establishment. Yes, it’s a chain but fresh produce is the order of the day from the marinated olives to start to the simply spectacular desserts.

They use seasonal produce well here. Chopping up the mushroom stalks, seasoning to add flavour. The Leggera pizzas have always been a favourite of mine and the new Vegan Giardiana, which at 491 calories is the lightest pizza on the menu, is priced at £11.75.

It is made up of slices of artichoke, closed cup mushroom, red onion and black olives, with tomato, vegan mozzarella alternative and garlic oil.

For vegan dessert, there is the limoncello and blackcurrant semifreddo, at £6.35.

There is a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and an extensive dessert menu to tempt many to linger over an espresso or two.

The new Affogato is, to quote the menu: “A single shot of coffee served alongside two scoops of vanilla gelato, finished with salted caramel sauce and a Lotus Biscoff biscuit”.

What the menu doesn’t tell you is that it is heaven in a glass (pictured, in heaven, yesterday).

What a lovely way to make the most of this heatwave.

They also have a new pink G&T for summer, outdoor tables and plenty of iced water and lemon to sustain you through a lunchtime gossip.
