Green gym opens in Branksome
Local residents are delighted after £35,000 of new outdoor fitness equipment has finally been installed at the Branksome recreation ground. After a three-year fight to protect their local open space, chairman of Branksome West Residents Association Jacqui Wilson said locals are “absolutely ecstatic”.
The new fitness equipment has coined the term ‘the green gym,’ and with the original intention for the equipment to be placed on the Poole recreation ground in 2009, Jacqui Wilson is delighted it happened at Branksome instead.
“It’s absolutely fantastic,” said Jacqui. “It’s looking really good down there now. We have had 30 trees planted, the pavilion has been painted inside and out and we have the green gym.”
Branksome residents were intent on saving their precious open space when Poole Town FC applied to build a stadium on part of it, but when the football club found a new site, the council granted plans for the recreation ground to have money pumped into it, seeing the years of deterioration and neglect put right.
Councillor Judy Butt, cabinet portfolio holder for leisure said: “The new equipment is fantastic and really easy to use. It provides an ideal opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to improve their fitness and have a healthier lifestyle.” Residents are on a roll and have applied for the recreation ground to become a part of the new Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee field initiative, as well as improvements to the play area and additional equipment for older children.
