Is Bournemouth a Good Base for a Haulage Business?

Thinking about starting up your own haulage firm? This can be an incredibly lucrative business if you plan it correctly. One of the key decisions you need to make is your base of operations. Is Bournemouth a good choice? Let’s take a closer look.

Starting with the Basics

Obviously, if you want to start a haulage firm then you need to begin with an HGV. This is actually one of the easiest things to find as you will be able to source one from all over the country. Should you plan to also haul goods on mainland Europe, you need to find an HGV that is compliant with the laws of the countries you will be driving in.

You also need to make sure that you and any drivers will be properly insured. Finding affordable HGV insurance quotes will be important in the early days; especially if you are searching for more than one driver. However, with your HGV insurance secured and any licences applied for, you can begin to bid for contracts.

Port Access

Bournemouth is in a great position for anyone thinking of starting a haulage firm as it is conveniently located close to some of the English Channel’s major ports. A driver would be a little over an hour away from the major ports at Southampton and Portsmouth. Being slightly outside these ports gives you a small advantage, especially if your focus will be on shipping to the West Country.

However, you also need to consider that any time spent on the road between the ports and your base will eat into the allotted hours your drivers have each day. If you are to remain compliant and within the law, you need to make sure that they are always spending the right amount of time on the road.

Hitting the Road

Bournemouth is in a great location for access to most of the West Country. You are a short ride away from Poole where you can board a ferry to the Channel Islands. Meanwhile, the A35 will take anyone to Devon where you can then join the A30 to head to Exeter and beyond into Cornwall.

If you want to head North, the M3 out of Southampton can take you up to London while also connecting to many of the other motorways around the country. No matter where your goods need to go, you will be able to navigate them there. Just make sure you can drive confidently and safely no matter where you might have to direct your HGV.

Is Bournemouth Right?

This seaside town isn’t often considered to be one of the great freight capitals of the world, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t base a business here. There is fantastic access to the rest of the country through the road system so you should not have any trouble moving your goods about. What’s more, Bournemouth is a fantastic place to live. It offers plenty of opportunities for your downtime away from the business, whether you have a family or it is just you. See what Bournemouth can offer you now.
